At least thirteen people killed and ninety-eight hurt in train crash in Mexico.

A tragic train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's key public works projects.

The accident happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a line developed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.

“We will meticulously determine the cause of this tragedy,” affirmed the national leader.

The leader announced that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The official added plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those affected.

Flagship Project of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the previous administration, whose time in office ended the previous year. This project was a hallmark of his administration's developmental goals for the southern region.

Another massive rail project from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to stimulate the economy of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Building Management and Risks Apprehensions

The building of both railway systems was supervised by the armed forces, marking a significant growth of its duties in national works. They were completed at an accelerated pace, beating predictions to be at least partly opened before the end of that administration.

However, this rushed timetable had simultaneously fueled ongoing concerns over operational security.

  • Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This includes an earlier accident this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced several non-fatal derailments.

Demands for Investigation and Halt

In the wake of the catastrophe, the chief of a key rival party called for an immediate pause in the building and running of all such projects.

This stoppage was proposed pending a comprehensive technical review. The party stated that the tragedy "demands swift accountability."

In response, the president insisted that the train had been running in complete compliance with all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "responsible" in both the construction and operation of these vital initiatives.
