Critical Role Campaign 4 Unveils the Soldiers Party

From the very beginning of Campaign 4, recently appointed game master Brennan Lee Mulligan has maintained audience suspense with rich lore, a wide array of personalities, and a thrilling plot including angels, evil spirits, and sinister influences growing in power within Dol-Makjar.

Heads-up: Spoilers for Episode 3 of Campaign 4 follow below.

The Soldiers Table Introduced

The latest chapter ended with a dramatic pause and revealed the initial group of heroes who will split off from the main group to embark on their independent quest, separate from the remaining groups.

The combat-focused team includes Teor (brought to life by the voice actor), Thimble (Laura Bailey), the strong-willed figure (Whitney), Wicander Halovar (Sam Riegel), and Kattigan Vale (Robbie).

Why Split the Party?

With a large ensemble, it was obvious from the beginning that maintaining everyone at the same party would be unworkable.

That’s why, the initial installments of this story serve as an Overture, weaving together the characters’ stories before dividing into three separate parties: Fighters, Planners, and Questers.

Characteristics of the Soldiers Table

According to the DM, the Soldiers table is for adventurers who are drawn to a traditionally charged fight-heavy story mode where peaceful solutions are few and far between.

Initially, figures such as the hesitant healer the cleric might look mismatched, but the events of episode 3 make it clear why these particular heroes are best suited for the Soldiers table.

Why They Must Go

First, the party understands precisely where to head next after a violent first encounter with the enemy group.

Casimir of Thjazi—whose passing kicked off the story’s plot—used The Crow Keepers for his selfish purposes, entering Thjazi’s hideout, striking Thimble, and stealing all the powerful objects to auction.

Casimir then settled his obligations and escaped to a fortified location in Gormalay, Timmony, above the city, with Cyd close behind.

Personal Motivations

Additionally, each character has a specific drive to exit the metropolitan area:

  • Thimble, as Thjazi’s partner and best friend, seeks vengeance.
  • The knowledgeable figure is familiar with the northern area and cautions that it is a dangerous place.
  • The strong character and Wicander, having disobeyed his house’s orders to execute the target and instead saved him, have no other options.
  • Yet, their position as key figures in the influential clan could enable the party enter areas they typically wouldn’t be able to.
  • Moreover, The fighter swore a life debt to Wicander for his deliverance and will now follow him everywhere.

Wanted and Hunted

Finally, all of them are sought by the rulers that rule the setting for a variety of reasons, making lingering locally dangerous:

  • The agile adventurer and The character are notorious outlaws.
  • The strong figure and The cleric turned against House Halovar and the horde of evil beings they are aligned with.
  • Teor is targeted for elimination by the clan.

This results in them no alternative but to head to the remote area in pursuit of Casimir.

Future Episodes

Based on episode three’s follow-up content, we find out that the combat party will be absent next week, leaving the remaining eight cast members to round up the Seekers and Strategists groups.

Fans can anticipate discovering which adventurers will be where in the season’s final introductory chapter, released on the upcoming Thursday.
