European Union Might Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Official States

The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the US against five European individuals involved in fighting digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’

European leaders such as the French president charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions were placed on figures that were at the heart of efforts to enact laws regulating US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to pressure American platforms to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in criticizing the decision.

The bans were enacted this week against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

The DSA is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders contend the regulations are necessary to combat hate speech and disinformation.

This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash involving Washington and Europe.
