Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside France's air force in a combined operation against an hidden munitions depot in Syria employed by the Daesh militant organization, according to the British defence ministry.

The location, located using reconnaissance, was assessed as housing weapons and explosive materials, the release indicated, and was located in mountainous terrain just to the north of the historic site of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our fighter planes used precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to target a several approach shafts down to the site... preliminary assessments are that the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.

There was no sign of any civilian impact in the attack late on Saturday and all the aircraft made a safe return, the ministry further stated.

The British jets were assisted by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

Daesh - referred to as ISIS - enforced extremist governance over parts of both Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This strike demonstrates British leadership, and determination to work closely with our allies, to stamp out any revival of the terrorist group and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the area," UK Defence Secretary John Healey said.

RAF aircraft have carried out overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "prevent any attempted resurgence" of the group following its routing at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I extend gratitude to every member of the UK armed forces participating in this strike for their professionalism and their bravery," Healey added. "They were among numerous British personnel stationed over the holidays. This mission, to eliminate militants who endanger our way of life, highlights how UK forces are always on standby, all year round, keeping Britain secure at home and powerful internationally."

During December, the American forces executed what it called a "large-scale strike" on Islamic State objectives in the country, subsequent to an assault claimed the lives of two American soldiers and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. says Islamic State still maintains roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in Iraq and Syria.
